Tillandsia 'Air Plants'
Tillandsias are not your typically house plant and have very different care needs. In fact they need less care than house plants, which can be difficult to some.
Location/Temperature: Provided the atmosphere is not too dry they can survive with water misting if located in a shower/bath room. Showering at least 2-3 times a week allows the steam from the shower moistens the plant. Tillandsias can be located in a wide variety of temperatures, ranging from 50-90 degrees.
Light: One of the most important areas of Tillandsia care is Light. If you are keeping them indoors, they require bright sunlight, we suggest placing them within 3 feet of a window (however not on the window sill during sever heat or cold) or near an artificial light source. Artificial light suggestions; Incandescent Plant Grow Lights, Sodium Lamp (high pressure sodium lamp), Son-Agro, Metal-Halide Lamp (LH Lamp) or a Grow-Lux Wide Spectrum Fluorescent Tubes.
Watering: If you are growing your plants indoors and the air is dry, you need to submerge the plant in water for 2-3 hours (at minimum) every two weeks. Tillandsias cannot get replacement water from their roots like a terrestrial plant or draw on internal reserves like a succulent plant. If you are growing your plant in a shaded-house or unheated home, you can use a soaking mist once or twice a week during the summer months and once a month in the cooler winter months.
Fertilizing: You can fertilize your plant by adding a pinch/small amount of the Bromeliad or Orchid Fertilizers to your mister/water once a month. Tillandsias can be sensitive to fertilizers, be careful to not over do it!
