January Tip of the Month Preparing for the seeding season January is a great time to prepare for the upcoming seeding season! You can visit seed company websites on the computer in the comfort of your warm cozy living room, or by leafing through the main seed catalogs that arrive in the mail during the first week of January. This is also a great time to visit your local garden center to review the latest seed racks for new and exciting varieties of annuals, perennials and veggies. Looking for a fun winter project to enjoy with your children? Pick up a few packets of herb seeds, (which are generally available by early January), and plant a small selection of spices to add to your window sill. The simplicity of lush green color will accent the starkness of your window sash, and the fine texture and elegant smell in the late February/early March harvesting will be exciting for everyone in the family! Shopping in January at your local garden center is generally a great time to take advantage of early season sales for containers, seeding mix, and seed packets. Watch for deals on seed packets….sometimes last year's seeds turn into great bargains for experienced gardeners. Mixing year old seed with new seed will help increase the germination count of any seed mix (beware-- year old seed generally reduces the germination rate by 25%+, so mixing with new seed allows room for error, and economical savings!). So enjoy those winter weekend afternoons in Vermont by planning ahead! Claussen’s seed corner generally is ready for you to purchase seeds and supplies.
